OVER THE MOUNTAIN READING CAMP

Building a Foundation and Love for Reading
Est. 2002

At Over the Mountain Reading Camp, we empower students to explore strategies and skills for reading accuracy, offer engaging activities through different texts and genres to gain comprehension skills, and build confidence through whole group and small group reading instruction.
Check out our site to learn more about all that we have to offer.

READING CAMP
2025

This is the same great reading camp that has taken place for over 20 years in Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills.
We are open to students in any local community who would like to attend.

MEET THE DIRECTORS

Erika Ponder and Mandy Smith are both educators with over 25 years experience each. They have achieved National Board Certification, completed training for multisensory reading strategies using the Orton Gillingham method, and both have received training in programs that are accredited by the International Dyslexia Association. Erika has completed the extensive Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) training that focuses on foundational reading and writing skills. Mandy has completed the Multisensory Language Education training and is a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT).

ABOUT THE CAMP

Over the Mountain Reading Camp is open to upcoming Kindergarten, First Grade, Second Grade and Third Grade Students. Students will review grade level reading and writing skills to help continue growth over the summer and prepare for the next school year. Teachers will provide activities and suggestions for continued practice over the summer months.

We believe that learning to read  should be fun and that the strong foundational skills for reading should be built through early structured  literacy.

"Both of my children attended Over the Mountain Reading Camp. They both LOVED it! I believe both of my children benefited from Mandy and Erika's program even though their learning styles are very different. Mandy and Erika were able to work uniquely with each of my children and their differences, make the camp fun and help my children meet their potential for reading. I highly recommend Over the Mountain Reading Camp for kids who need help with reading or just for the fun of it! "

Elementary Classroom

Both of my boys have attended the Reading Camps held by Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Ponder.  The Reading Camps provided my children with great instruction, preparation for the upcoming school year, information and resources regarding my boys areas of strengths and weaknesses, and most importantly they had fun!  I would highly recommend this camp to increase your child’s knowledge and love for reading!
